Master Derek Kwon started his Taekwondo journey at the age of ten in South Korea. From there he developed his skills and trained vigorously until he got accepted into Yong In University. Yong In University is a private university that is South Korea’s top Taekwondo professional school. YIU’s foundational philosophy is to contribute to society by cultivating a strong sense of individual justice and morality in their students, which is where Master Kwon continued to grow mentally and physically.
From there, he provided his services in the Korean Military. He was the Taekwondo coach in the Taekwondo division of the military. He also was a member of the Korean military’s Taekwondo Team.
Not only was he involved in the military through Taekwondo, he also served as the Second Captain of the Korean National Junior Team. Afterwards, he became the head of the Korea Tigers Taekwondo team which is an internationally famous demonstration team.
After achieving such great accomplishments, Master Kwon decided to come to the States in order to provide an environment of strict and disciplined learning in Taekwondo in America. His goal is to use the martial arts mentality as a base to build strong minds and bodies.
